Single storey basement extensions have become the norm, but one property owner had a more ambitious scheme.

Wyatt Carruthers Jebb were appointed to undertake the structural engineering of a three-storey basement construction. Such an ambitious scheme comes with significant technical complications.

To achieve the construction of new three storey basement below an existing house requires careful structural design and sequencing.

Achieving an excavation of this kind requires a sound understanding of basic structural principles. In this case we adopted piles and the top down construction technique.

The design required both temporary works design and structural engineering of the final structure, careful sequencing and above all attention to detail. Local buildings were monitored for movement using lasers.
