Extension on Top of an Existing Four-Storey Office Building

The brief was for an internally open plan Penthouse Flat arrangement for a single storey roof top extension on top an existing four-storey in-situ reinforced concrete office building.

// Project Overview

This project required Wyatt Carruthers Jebb to survey the existing structure to identify load bearing elements - the original information provided by the client was not correct.

Several structural options were considered including the use of the existing roof as a new floor plate.

A steel frame was ultimately chosen to be cost effective and for its benefits in build-ability and its high strength/weight ratio.

Combined hand-calcs and FE modelling were used to design the longitudinally braced steel frame and transversely moment resisting frame allowed for an internally open plan arrangement as requested by the client.
