Wyatt Carruthers Jebb Ltd were instructed to serve Notices on the Owners of the properties surrounding a terrace of three Victorian buildings in Great Portland Street
The properties were to be demolished and replaced by a concrete framed six storey office building.
Two of the storeys were to be below Ground Level which required extensive underpinning to the party walls and extensive temporary support to the party walls during and after the demolition of the three Victorian buildings.
Wyatt Carruthers Jebb Ltd were also appointed as the Project Structural Engineers
The brief from the client (Architect) was to provide a feasible scheme for the design of a 6-storey structure with open plan floor areas (including basement) between adjacent structure, retaining an existing front facade, in central London.
Two options were considered, (1) Using RC forming a shear core, slabs and columns - with a steel frame penthouse; (2) Or using a braced steel core, steel columns, composite metal deck floors and a steel framed penthouse.
The RC frame option was the favoured option due to its versatility to be able to alleviate the following considerations: buildability and access issues in confined spaces, fire design considerations disproportionate collapse design, tolerances for setting out of perimeter columns, etc.
The structure was designed using a Finite Element Model in SCIA engineer.
