Wyatt Carruthers Jebb were invited to provide structural engineering advice following concerns raised with structural cracking occurring to a scheduled monument.
An engineer from Wyatt Carruthers Jebb Ltd met with a representative from Historic England. It was immediately identified that a full survey of the chimneys themselves would have required abseiling. Observations on site indicated that some repairs have previously been carried out these chimneys and as such it was considered that investigation and repair of the chimneys could be undertaken at a later date.
The main concern related to the spalling of concrete/stone from the underside of the arch and the cracks to the face of the arch which could be inspected and repaired from a scaffold. Wyatt Carruthers Jebb arranged for scaffold access ensuring that no part of the scaffold was fixed to the monument.
A survey was undertaken with the outcome of a detailed repair schedule. Works were undertaken by specialist conservation contractors comprising treatment of rusting steel beams and reinforcement, replacement of the asphalt roof covering and stone restoration encompassing repointing with a stone and silver sand mix. Lichen was left in place and stonework was not cleaned to comply with the requirements of English Heritage.
